Is software piracy really piracy?

I mean honestly, college students who have zero income to spend on something they could really use, AND NOT FOR MONITARY GAIN either. I think that’s the real point. Stealing and selling someone else’s hard work? Guilty. Sharing something you paid for with a friend? Innocent. If a friend asked you if they could borrow a jacket, would you say, “you thief! I can’t believe you think that’s okay! You have to get your own otherwise the people who made this jacket won’t get what they deserve for making it.” Since when is money the end all say all anyway. I write a song, record it and get it out. COPY IT! The more the better. I care more about whether or not people enjoy my creation than how much paper I have in my pocket. What are great people known for? Money or doing something worth while? Well, today I guess it’s different; i.e. Bill Gates. What do you think?

Is software piracy really a threat for IT industry ?give me reason?

SerialsGalore.com – does this website really belong to the FBI and track your IP address?

I’m doing a paper on piracy for school and came across the above website. I wanted to see how easy it would be to download a “crack” or “serial” so I clicked on one of the links. This page told me that my IP address had been logged by the FBI and that the only way to clear my IP address from the log was to buy the serial? I don’t even have the program I was looking at on my computer!! Is this website for real??

Is DRM issue with BioShock on the PC really that bad?

I wanted to get it for my PC, but this amazon.com review freaked me
out with the talk about un-deletable files. I would get it through Steam, but I want a hard copy of the game (a disc). It would be boring to list computer componenets, so I’ll just say I have Windows Vista Ultimate Service Pack 2 32-bit.
http://www.amazon.com/BioShock-pc/dp/B000MK694E/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1249709161&sr=1-1
The review I read below:
“UNDISPUTED FACT:
BIOSHOCK will only install for a limited number of times (it was 3 but – after a deluge of eMails and bad reviews – it was upped to 5). So, if you install it you will be reluctant to uninstall once finished and will have to carry those 9GB on your HardDrive for a long time. On top of that, its resale value is down the drain the moment one pops the box open…
Even after the patch that removed the activation limit, uninstalling still leaves behind certain irremovable folders that will make sure it can be re-established in the future.
So one has to ask: even after paying $50 for it, WHO ACTUALLY OWNS MY COPY?
UNDISPUTED FACT:
The game utilizes an overzealous version of SecuROM 7+. They either activated all its available options or had a special version custom made. No other game company dared behaving in such heavy-handed way. This means that if your computer has more than one disc drive (or even one but non-DRM certified ones) it may block them, whereas the game may not even install if you are running virtual drives or have certain media-burning software installed (even NERO has been known to be considered …”pirate-ware”!)
DISPUTED FACT :
It has been widely reported that BIOSHOCK installs a RootKit. Both MICROSOFT’s ROOTKIT DETECTION TOOL and AVG ANTI-VIRUS detected either the RootKit or its actions. Recently, AVG was made to release a special update (just for BIOSHOCK) to ignore this alert.
In hacker lingo, to “take someone’s Root” means to insert a procedure that “will allow the intruders to maintain root access (highest privilege) on the system without the system administrator even seeing them”.
Official BIOSHOCK announcements (and their “unofficial” reviewers here at AMAZON) will try to persuade everyone who would listen that there is nothing there, so stop looking and don’t even mention it.
Understandable reaction since, the existence of a RootKit would be a solid basis for class-action litigation.
Weight the facts and judge for yourself.
UNDISPUTED FACT:
BIOSHOCK effectively revokes our Administrator rights on our own computers. Here is what happens: even after completely uninstalling the game there is a mystery folder that canNOT be removed, no matter what!
On WinXP it is located here:
“C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Application Data\SecuRom”
As administrators, we could (unwisely) delete even Windows System folders – yet BIOSHOCK’s mystery folder apparently claims a higher authority level? What this folder does and why should it get placed into OUR computers so that we cannot remove it even as Administrators, is beyond me. And I, for one, do NOT appreciate it one bit. (A quick internet search revealed a number of suggestions on how to get rid of it, ranging from clearly unsafe to catastrophic…)
True, almost every game leaves one or two folders behind after uninstalled – but this NEVER REVOKES OUR ADMINISTRATOR RIGHTS to delete them!
I do understand that there are production and publishing costs to get recovered as well as profit projections to be reached. Companies that wish to protect their investment will always try to fight piracy. This is only reasonable and expected.
However, with BIOSHOCK, as it is currently available by 2K GAMES, it gets WAY OUT OF HAND & WELL BEYOND RIDICULOUS!! ”

I’m really freaking out- How often do companies press charges for piracy?

I got an ‘Notice of Claim of Copyright Infringement’ after I downloaded the Sherlock Holmes movie illegally. How likely is it that they are gonna press charges? I downloaded it on the 17th this month, they sent it two days later, on the 19th, and I just deleted it now. It was only a level one. But what’s the chance they will press charges?
P.S. Please don’t say something like, ‘You shouldn’t have downloaded it in the first place.’

Is torrent piracy really a crime (without trying to deny that legally it is) ?

Like I said, I’m not denying it being breaking the law with big trouble for you if you spread copyrighted stuff via BitTorrent for instance, but in your opinion how much harm is it?
Let’s put it this way – I once knocked onto a forum, where a certain program was discussed and somebody asked for help about it while somehow mentioning that he had torrented it. One of the honest buyers immediately stormed him with “…torrenting it is just like stealing it off a store shelf.” Now everybody ought to understand that even if you did pirate a program , NEVER mention it on a forum , but I should point out that it isn’t exactly like stealing it off a store shelf in the sense that all he got was an exact copy of an online store item which many others have downloaded after paying and no box material or transportation fees ever went into that exact copy specifically.
This is where I’ll point out that of course somebody needs to get payed for compiling the program (which is far from an easy task) and if everybody just pirated it , the maker would just go bankrupt. But, if you think about it, isn’t buying a non-material form of information, like a movie or something , online simply getting it free and donating the price to the makers to fund their continuous work? What if even without it being available as a torrent, I wouldn’t buy it no matter how I wanted it and simply got it this way because it was free? It’d mean that I wouldn’t have payed anyway, but didn’t cause any material damage by getting it this way either. You heard of this Deviance thing going on around torrenting sites? It’s this group of computer users who release free torrents of games while always adding this message to a readme file that comes along – “After playing it, buy it. We did.” And that’s the golden truth – if you want the makers to make a good sequal, some other good product or improve the existing , go ahead and pay them! They need it to continue work, bring the bread on the table and pay their bills . But if you just get a copy like in the instance afore mentioned, is it bad? Better yet, what if the program has an active online community going about it and by getting it this way you simply start actively taking part in it, contributing to it aso. while not having enough money to buy it in any imaginable closer time? I mean software isn’t food – you don’t NEED it, so pirating it can’t be called disrupting the economy of highly necessary goods. In fact making it is just taking the risk of no-one bothering to buy it anyway, unless of course you’re fulfilling the people’s hidden desires and cutting a buck of of it , which of course isn’t part of the overall economy’s backbone. So, yeah.
If you read all the mumbo-jumbo above, you probably understood that I’m not trying to initiate some crazy revolution against copyright but just squeezing out your opinions . So, who’s first?
By the way, I’ll note that in a broad sense I only meant entertainment based stuff. I just didn’t want to put the word “game” everywhere so’s you’d think I’m a big Quake junkie X).

Need somebody that’s REALLY computer savvy (aka virus talk)…?

I just got a Trojan virus on my other computer, it’s the one described in this article:
http://www.techshout.com/security/2007/05/trojan-kardphisher-sends-microsoft-piracy-control-message-asking-for-credit-card/
If anyone knows anything about this or knows if it’s possible to fix it, let me know, it’s crucial. Some very, very important info was on that computer. Experienced people only, please. Thanks in advance.

Does it really matter if we kill al-quedia in in Iraq’s #1?

Since Al-Quedia is a horizontally integrated organization, does it really affect them much if their #1 is taken out?
Does our use of the language of “#1″ speak to our own lack of understanding of horizontal organizations and how to combat them and how to measure success? Are we fighting against a new paradigm in combat using old world tactics? As a former pirate, I can speak to the strength of horizontal and parallel organizational structures when opposed by vertical structures. The riaa and mpaa have failed and will continue to fail at combating piracy just because of the organizational structures they’re built upon. There is no “top” to take out, merely a collection of loosely arranged cells. Is our military fighting the same kind of fight?
How do you measure success? In today’s issue of the Wall Street Journal, it was reported that global terrorist attacks were up 25% in frequency over the past year. Is that a metric we should be using to determine our effectiveness?

Does software piracy really hurt the software industry?

I don’t think so. Most people who download pirated software wouldn’t buy the real thing anyway. They either download it for free or don’t use it at all. So how much does this really hurt the software companies? Are they really losing $500 or gaining another person to spread the word for their product?

Can one really get custom-made open source software on the Internet

The answer is an emphatic yes. Many people are under the impression that open-source software is an option only to be used when there is no in-house solution for a technological problem. One would be surprised to know that many companies are going in for open source software which is subsequently made to suit their own requirements. This software is known as custom-made open source software. Why companies like Linux are going in for open-source Linux software is because many technological giants can afford to buy the software according to their requirements and off the shelf, but the ordinary people are looking for options in which they can save a lot of money as well as get the functions that they require in their software. That is why it is quite sensible to look for places where you can get open source Linux software and open source Windows software and then get them customized according to your requirements to get the perfect user custom software. This can be done by us. There are many cases when you are not going to get your software off the shelf. All you have to do is browse through our catalogs and look at the list of software which we have. If any of the software meets your requirements, you can buy it from us. Then you can get it modified according to your requirements from us! That is what custom-made open source software is all about. The same thing goes for modifications in open source Perl scripts and PHP scripts.
Now take the example of software which you have just bought online or downloaded from the company website. After a couple of days of work, on the software, you find yourself extremely satisfied with its functioning. The software is extremely useful. Suddenly you find a message popping up every 5 seconds, asking you to buy the software and register the license number, before you can proceed any further in the proceedings. You get so irritated that you remove the software from your computer and start looking on the Internet for other options which do not annoy you so often. But if you come to us, we can modify your software according to your requirements so that it does not keep wondering if you have registered or not instead of continuing with its normal function of designing your website, doing your accounting or doing your online selling for you. All this is done in a completely professional manner to give you complete satisfaction and full value for your money. So if you want your open source Windows software and your open-source Linux software made into customized open-source software, according to your requirements and specifications, come to us!

Can You Really Download Free Movies Online Legally and Securely?

With all the newest internet technologies available to us, downloading movies has become very easy. But downloading movies online free should be carefully done as you may easily step into some legal problems.
There are online movie sites that may not be completely legal as far as copyright and piracy issues are concerned. So, make sure you only download copyright free and piracy free movies online.
The use of file sharing networks is another method of downloading free movies online. These sites make use of the peer-to-peer technology to exchange data between users. An example of this is the Limewire website.
Many of these sites are still in operation. However, there are certain disadvantages like most movie files on these sites are considered illegal copies. This is a serious issue which you need to be aware of.Furthermore, with free file sharing sites you risk having your computer infected by viruses and spyware which are common on these sites. This is a consequence of distributing the files freely.
So, the best way to download movies online is to get enrolled into a movie membership program site. With these sites, you pay a membership fee, but you get unlimited access to downloading movies. You can download full version movies from these movie sites and you can save a lot of money from buying movie tickets and other expenses.
All you need to do is search for the term and you will find a host of websites offering movie downloads. Each of these websites has major movie collections and thus you can search for your favorite movies on them.
