My cousin just bought a laptop, never had a computer before..what can i teach him?

He comes from a ranch family came here 1 year ago and it’s his first computer. But he wants to burn dvd’s and copy stuff. I’m sure if he finds out how, he will start checking out CD’s and DVD’s from the library and then copy them. He begged me to show him how to do it and i just refused. During his stay here he has managed to get friends who are not what you would call descent. i mean, they swap stuff and do piracy…So they will probably pass him DVD’s or CD’s they own and then my cousin will like to rip them to his computer. I’m worried about him. IF he finds out how to do stuff he will go wild. How can i teach him not to do it. He’s 18 and he hangs around with all kinds of wacky young guys. And then he doesn’t even know that computers can get viruses and that people can damage his computer and erase his stuff. I mean, he doesn’t know about computers and not aware of the problems andyet he doesn’t want to listen to me. Any help?

Does anybody know any good websites for free legal software or computer parts?

how do computer shops install windows xp on a machine without having to sell the customer a legal copy??

ok so i dont know how this works but to me this seems kinda like piracy, or theft. how does a computer shop charge me $60 to $80 to install windows on a machine without having to sell me a copy? i cant go buy it for less than $100 anywhere and its only “legal” for me to install it on one machine. so how do these shops get away with that? or are they just keeping people disks? and also how do prebuilt machines like dell sell for $300 when the OS is $200?? i feel like im getting screwed somehow here…

How do I get rid of this computer virus?

Yesterday I was on Twitter, clicked on someone’s link that I was “following” because I never actually followed them. Anyway, it installed some kind of virus. Now my Vista Windows Security Center keeps popping up saying there is a Piracy Threat, and System Integrity Threat, and all kinds of stuff. Then it asks me to delete the virus, but I’d have to purchase the Vista Security. This is all making my Internet Explorer not work as well. (I am on another computer now.) I do not currently have any virus protection, such as Norton. I just can’t afford to pay for it. So, can anyone recommend a way or a free program to clear out this virus that just made my computer almost unusable??? Thank you VERY much in advance… Thanks POP3y3. But I guess I should ask, would downloading a virus protection help now? I mean, after the fact…? Like closing the barn door after the horse already got out.

does my computer have a virus?

i was watching an episode of a tv show on my laptop when the computer froze and i had to restart it. when i turned it back on, a thing popped up and said i was violating some type of anti-piracy law and that i would receive a subpoena in the mail in a week. the wallpaper and icons on my computer were gone and instead were replaced by a picture of yellow caution tape. also, a box popped up and asked me if i wanted to settle the case now or send it to court. is this a virus or did i really violate some sort of law?

Is there a way I can Record/Dub scenes from movies onto my computer?

What I’m NOT trying to do is out & out movie/copyright PIRACY…..I’m just trying to make a “favorite movie scenes” video on my computer, which shows a collection of some of my personal favorite movie scenes/lines over the years. (I’m a certified movie-nut!) I try to DUB a VHS or DVD using my new Canon Camcorder to a digital format…and then onto my computer for editing it all together….but I get that message that says “copyright protected” or something like that. ANYWAY to circumvent this stuff? Again,….I don’t look at it as some kind of “piracy”..cuz it’s for my own PERSONAL use, entertainment……not out to make a profit or anything….just for FUN! So…if I’ve not stepped over some ethical line here……HELP!!! Thanks very much! **(I ALWAYS award those “best answer” points!) How can I do this ANYONE?? Have any clue?

Can you install Windows XP on more than one computer using one legit CD?

The people at the store said you could, although the second person wouldnt get the automatic updates. Although I was reading the Windows XP Manual and it has a FAQ. One of the questions was something like “during setup I was asked to activate Windows, do I have to?”. The answer was yes, activating Windows XP helps prevent piracy. My understanding is that when you activate it, it’s like locking the product key so you cannot use it again (unless you uninstall windows on that computer). So my question is, is that how it works? If I activate it does that mean I cannot install it on my laptop with the same CD? I dont exactly have ANOTHER 250 dollars to go buy another Windows XP. If all this is a yes, you have 30 days to activate windows, and then you can’t use it anymore if you dont activate it. Can I install Windows on both computers, not activating it on either one, so I have those 30 days to save up another 250 dollars to buy another XP? I sure hope all that makes sense to someone..
